Deakin University

Deakin University Northern Hub is a relatively modest project with the opportunity to deliver an incredible impact on the University ’s western campus edge.

Positioned adjacent to Buildings HC and HD, the new pavilion will provide a podium base for the existing buildings while activating the ground floor café, landscaped courtyard and integrating the existing pedestrian network that is accessible to the public.

Deakin University will invite the public in further by creating a landscaped courtyard providing an urban space and asset for the community.

This public asset may be activated seven days of the week and will connect to the adjacent fields which are part of the broader master plan precinct. Importantly, our design approach ensures that the pavilion and canopy, despite being two forms, are integrated as one cohesive design.

The architectural lines and angles of the new pavilion façade speaks to the structural elements of the covered canopy and conversely the canopy talks to the pavilion through its cantilevered roof form and protection it provides. This project both optimises what was previously underutilised space and delivers a valuable asset to the University and community alike.
